Meet Dr. Alvis

Stephen G. Alvis, DDS

Dr. Stephen G. Alvis is originally from Fairfax, Virginia and has lived and practiced orthodontics in Harrisonburg since 1982. He and his wife, Pattie, have four children and three dogs.

Dr. Alvis graduated Phi Betta Kappa from the University of North Carolina in 1971 with a major in chemistry. While at UNC, he was a member of the football team and is a huge Tarheels fan – he loves to see patients wearing Carolina blue! After receiving his dental degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1975, Dr. Alvis completed a residency in general dentistry at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and then went on to serve his country in Puerto Rico for four years as a dentist in the Navy. Dr. Alvis returned to MCV for a two-year orthodontic residency, which he completed in 1982.

In 1990, Dr. Alvis attained board certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, and the Virginia Association of Orthodontists, and he has enjoyed active participation and service to several community and professional organizations through the years. Based on this involvement, Dr. Alvis was honored as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists in 1998.

In addition to UNC sports, Dr. Alvis enjoys hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle. He looks forward to continuing his practice of orthodontics and making a difference in the lives of his patients.
